An Interview with Mark Remy of Runner’s World

We runners are a reading bunch. I’d say the more a runner runs, the more we read, usually about running.

In fact, if I could read about running while I run, I would. But we runners also tend to be injury prone, keeping even the most avid reader-runners from attempting such a feat. That said, I bet if someone’s done it, Mark Remy, editor-at-large of Runner’s World, has documented it.

A Novel Dream

Aug

CricketIn my last post, I floated the idea of reading a novel to my almost 4-year-old daughter, Riley. A few days later, we’re halfway through Charlotte’s Web.

All in all, she seems to be enjoying it immensely. Even if it’s giving her dreams that many would call nightmares. …

Open BookWhat one novel would you want your child to read above all others?

According to a Telegraph story out this week, that was the question poised by a recent University of Worcester survey. The answer? 1 in 5 parents said A Christmas Carol.

LeakyCon

It was like the Super Bowl of Harry Potter. That’s the only way I can describe LeakyCon, where witches, wizards and muggles recently celebrated all things Potter – and RIF was honored to join the festivities.

Num What?

Aug

It may be five years old, but this clip is timeless in both its ability to amuse and inspire.

The kids who reach the level of national spelling bees are amazing to watch. Many of them start out at small spelling bees held at their schools or community centers. And their parents encourage them at home with flash cards and spelling games at the kitchen table.

Have a budding bee champion in your family? RIF is partnering with Macy’s for our 7th Annual Spelling Bee in 27 cities across the nation — open to kids ages 8 to 11. Events run from August 25 to September 22.

We can’t guarantee another numnah moment but it’s sure to be fun for all. Check out the Macy’s website for more details, including some great prizes … iPad anyone?

Severus Snape is a Book Person

RIF staffers are at LeakyCon in Chicago right now (which is *awesome*). A very convincing Severus stopped by our booth on charity row.

Book People out there, this photo is ripe for a caption. Give us your best stuff.

I remember the 1984 Olympic Games like yesterday. Sam the Eagle (not that Sam the Eagle, this one) was everywhere. Even on the shirt my mom couldn’t get me to take off long enough to wash.

I Love My Hair!

London, my best friend’s daughter, was thrilled to start preschool last year. I still remember photos of her first day, grinning ear to ear, confidently entering her new school thirsty for knowledge.

But as each day passed, her attitude changed. She started seeing differences between herself and her classmates and she didn’t like what she saw.

Encyclopedia BrownI hated reading.

My mom, a teacher, was always an avid reader. I loved when she read aloud to us. I even loved books. But I’d rather not read them myself.
