Thanks to a U.S. Department of Education Innovative Approaches to Literacy grant in 2012, we began the RIF Read for Success research study to test a model aimed at reducing summer reading loss in children from economically disadvantaged communities. The results made us cheer! […]

Comment on February of Friends by Frederica sagiani http://rifblog.org/2015/02/04/february-of-friends/#comment-14874 Tue, 17 Feb 2015 21:48:16 +0000 http://rifblog.org/?p=2778#comment-14874 As a former teacher and principal, I am delighted to see that RIF has stood solid on the grounds of helping students see the value of books. I am also happy to see the emphasis on friendship and not strictly love for Valentine’s day. Our kids need to be taught to love themselves, their peers/significant others and then fall in love. Good books make difficult topics easy and comfortable for all of us to engage in fruitful conversation.. Thank you and keep up good work. I would love to see a more diverse theme coverage, encouraging discussion and dissemination of the cultural diversity that surrounds us.. A celebration of our friends and neighbors is a celebration of who we are as people, as community.

Comment on Trick or READ! by Sue Chehrenegar http://rifblog.org/2014/10/22/trick-or-read/#comment-14581 Thu, 23 Oct 2014 15:29:47 +0000 http://rifblog.org/?p=2606#comment-14581 Adults can underscore the importance of reading to children by selecting a costume that copies the style and look of the character in a children’s book. One year I read that Family Literacy Day was going to be on November 1st, the day after Halloween.

Our company encouraged us to wear a costume on Halloween Day. I had in my closet a dress with huge printed white flowers. Since I am very short, I had never worn it. (It had been given to me by a relative.) Still, I realized that the large flowers were just the sort of thing that Ms Frizzle would have on one of her dresses.

I also had a pair of heeled sandles, into which I could slip a real white flower. I cut two flowers from the ones in our garden on Halloween morning. I took those to work, wearing my Ms Frizzle style dress. Before going to the afternoon costume party, I put a flower in each of my shoes.

I was not sure that everyone would know that I was supposed to be Ms. Frizzle. Yet that was not my biggest concern. I wanted to encourage literacy. Consequently, I pinned to my dress a small sign that said “Family Literacy Day, November 1st.”

I have been the RIF cordinator for the past 4 years. I will do my best to mention her name to the staff/children of KCAA that receive RIF books for k-5th grades on Nov.20th -21st. I am so very thankful for the RIF program for this 92 % low income school. Reading a real book will never replace an ipad to me but I understand that book reading in the future will need to go more electronic to help save trees!

She was a Board member who was always willing to do “whatever it took.” I remember the last time before she became ill when I called her to help by attending a meeting with me in New York City; she said she would be there before the 10 AM start time. When she walked in with her suitcase, I asked where she was headed after the meeting…she replied she had just returned from the west coast on the red eye…what dedication! We all used to marvel at all Loretta was doing, still skiing strong in Europe in the last three years…and oh, how she was always pushing for better books for children. Children in America who will never know the name Loretta Barrett reaped benefits from her, we shall miss her.

His vision helped lead others to embrace and support those who needed it most.
