Children’s books have the potential to teach, inspire, and bring people together. But at RIF, we share the opinion that a children’s book can also be just for fun. Pledge with Book People Unite today and tell us why you love children’s books in the comments below. Book People Unite!

My children grew up with bedtime stories. On their own bedtime stories. After saying, “Good Night…” we would give them books like Fredric Remington; Painting and Sculpting, Arabian Horse World magazine or an audio cassette by authors like Louis L’Amour. With the only instructions being don’t fold the pages and fall asleep when you get tired, but most importantly just enjoy looking at the pictures, and make up your own stories.
This started when they turned five or so, and continued until they could read on their own. They grew up loving books, and quite proficient at reading.
Why did I do this? Kids aren’t always ready to go to sleep right at 8 o’clock, and sometimes reading should be just for fun. Even if they truly can’t read yet. I know I liked reading this way when I was a child. Fun first. Facts later.

A children’s book should be entertaining to engage the young reader in the story. Yes, reading can be just for fun. I’m self-publishing a children’s book that is packed with lots of fun…and I’m looking for fellow children’s literacy advocates to help me complete the project.
